Weather in Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix is located in the heart of the Sonoran desert and enjoys some of the most enjoyable temperatures during the winter months and some of the hottest temperatures during the summer months.  The temperature reaches or exceeds 100 °F (38 °C) on an average of 89 days during the year, including most days from early June through early September. The hottest recorded temperature was reached on June 26, 1990 when the temperature reached a high of 122 °F. However the dry Arizona air makes these summer temperatures more tolerable early in the season; however by mid July the monsoon rains arrive and bring an increase of humidity that make outdoor activity less than desirable.  From October until the end of April, one can expect to enjoy some of the greatest weather across the country.  Temperatures range from highs in the mid-60's to mid-80's during the day while night time temperatures range from the mid-40's to mid 50's.

Phoenix averages over 300 sunny days per year.  The average annual rainfall is 8.4 inches at Sky Harbor Airport (the main commercial airport in Phoenix). March is the wettest month of the year (1.07 inches). Rain is particularly scarce from April through June. From July to mid-September, the monsoonal rains bring a surge of humidity and desert thunderstorms.  These storms have been known to produce hail, heavy winds, torrential downpours, flooding, blinding dust storms (known as haboobs), and spectacular lightening displays. During the winter months, snow is virtually non-existent, though there have been reports of snow fall in the North Scottsdale/Cave Creek areas where the elevation is above 2,500 feet above sea level.
